Eleven Surprising Facts From Typewriter History

The typewriter was not invented in one clean moment. Its familiar form emerged through centuries of experiments, commercial partnerships, keyboard debates, workplace change, and engineering breakthroughs.

A History Full of Useful Complications

Popular retellings often compress typewriter history into a few famous names. The fuller story is more interesting: dozens of inventors explored mechanical writing, several machines competed for “first” status, and features we now take for granted arrived over many decades.

A note about “firsts”

“First patent,” “first documented writing machine,” “first commercially produced model,” and “first commercially successful typewriter” are different milestones. This guide keeps those distinctions clear.

1. Henry Mill received an early writing-machine patent in 1714

The English patent described a machine or method for impressing letters one after another so writing would resemble print. No surviving working machine is known, so the patent is an important idea—not the beginning of a proven commercial product.

2. The typewriter had many inventors

Mechanical writing was an incremental invention. Machines were developed to make print-like text, speed correspondence, and help blind writers communicate. Different inventors solved different problems before the modern form emerged.

3. The 1868 U.S. patent became a commercial turning point

Christopher Latham Sholes, Carlos Glidden, and Samuel W. Soulé received U.S. Patent 79,265 for their writing machine. James Densmore became an important financial backer and development partner. E. Remington & Sons began producing the Sholes and Glidden Type-Writer commercially in the 1870s.

4. The origin story of QWERTY is debated

QWERTY developed through revisions to the Sholes-era keyboard and became established through commercial use and training. The popular claim that it was simply designed to slow typists is too neat; historians continue to debate the precise technical and business reasons for the layout.

5. Early machines often hid the line being typed

On many “upstrike” machines, typebars struck the underside of the platen, so the typist could not see the current line without lifting the carriage. Front-strike visible-writing designs, especially the Underwood approach of the 1890s, helped establish the familiar 20th-century layout.

6. Some early keyboards resembled piano keys

Before the compact keytop layout became standard, inventors experimented with arrangements that looked more like small pianos. The visual resemblance reflected both available mechanical ideas and the search for an interface users could understand.

7. Typewriting transformed office work—and women's access to it

As businesses adopted typewriters, the role of “typewriter” or typist grew rapidly. Employers recruited many women into clerical positions, opening paid office work while also creating gendered job categories and unequal advancement. The machine shaped labor as much as correspondence.

8. Mark Twain's “first typewritten novel” story is complicated

Twain is commonly linked to the first typewritten manuscript submitted to a publisher, but accounts differ over which book and whether he typed it himself. Life on the Mississippi is often cited as the first typed manuscript he submitted; the broader lesson is that even famous technology stories deserve careful wording.

9. Electric power did not arrive all at once

Inventors experimented with powered typing before a practical office market developed. Electric models gained momentum through the 20th century, and IBM entered the field after acquiring Electromatic Typewriters production facilities in 1933.

10. IBM replaced the typebar basket with a type element in 1961

The IBM Selectric used a rotating and tilting spherical element instead of individual typebars. It reduced jamming, kept the printing element moving across the page, and made typeface changes possible by swapping the element. IBM later introduced lift-off correction on the 1973 Correcting Selectric.

11. Typewriters never completely disappeared

Personal computers displaced them from most desks, but new manual and electronic machines are still sold. Reconditioned IBM Wheelwriters, vintage portables, prison-approved models, and modern Royal and Nakajima typewriters continue to serve writers, offices, institutions, and collectors.
