Identify the ribbon system first, record the old supply number, and follow the path already built into the machine. The correct method is different for spool ribbons, electronic cassettes, and IBM Wheelwriter cartridges.
Step One: Identify Your Ribbon System
Two-spool ribbon
Common on manual and some typebar electric machines. Inked fabric travels from one spool to the other through guides and the ribbon vibrator.
Film or fabric cassette
Common on electronic typewriters. The entire cartridge is replaced when exhausted; cassette shape and part number must match.
IBM Wheelwriter cartridge
A drop-in ribbon cartridge sits above the printwheel and pairs with a separate correction tape system.

Switch off and open
Turn the machine off, unplug it, and open the top cover.
Release the cartridge
Pull the blue ribbon latch or release control for your model, then lift the cartridge straight up.

Lower it into place
Keep the exposed ribbon film away from the printwheel and guides. Align the cartridge with its supports.
Press until seated
Push down evenly until the cartridge clicks or sits securely, then close the cover and type a test line.

Photograph the old path
Before removing anything, take a clear picture of both spools, reversing eyelets, guides, and the ribbon vibrator.
Raise the ribbon vibrator
Use Shift Lock and gently press a key if that exposes the ribbon path on your model. Never force typebars together.
Unthread and remove
Unhook the ribbon from the vibrator and guides, then lift the old spools from their posts.
Install the new spools
Seat the correct spools. For black/red ribbon, black normally sits above red, but confirm with the color-selector markings.
Follow the original route
Thread through each guide and the ribbon vibrator exactly as photographed. Wind enough ribbon to remove slack.

How to Replace an Electronic Ribbon Cassette
Electronic models from Nakajima, Brother, Smith Corona, Royal, Canon, Panasonic, Swintec, and others use many different cassettes. The usual process is to switch off and unplug the machine, open the print cover, release and lift the old cassette, remove the new cassette's transport packaging, place its ribbon in front of the printwheel, and press the cassette into its mounting points.
That general outline is not a substitute for the manual. Some cartridges have tension knobs, locks, guide tabs, or model-specific insertion angles. Use the Typewriter Manuals page when available.

They fit many two-spool machines, but not every spindle, spool, ribbon width, cartridge, or electronic typewriter. Compatibility must still be checked.
Can I rewind a film cassette?
Most single-use film cassettes are replaced when exhausted. Rewinding can cause poor output, wrinkling, or damage.
