Wakefield Hanging Carolina Wren House

Wakefield premium bird houses are hand-crafted in the USA and made of only the finest, sustainably-grown Eastern White Pine Wood. Eastern White Pine is an ideal material for bird houses because it provides superior insulation during the summer and winter months while remaining light in weight and easy to hang. This lightweight design enables the house to sway in the wind while it hangs, which makes for a preferred living environment for wrens, who prefer living in a hanging house.

This house was designed with a larger entrance than that of typical wren houses. The extra width gives Carolina Wrens the ability to carry wide sticks into their house for nesting material. The house itself is rough-sawn to give the fledglings a foothold when they are ready to climb out of the nest, and it will weather to a natural gray, blending in with its outdoor surroundings. The wood is one inch thick for insulation, both from the heat of summer and the cold of winter. Ventilation is provided at the top of each side and the house is light-colored to keep it cool in the summer (many baby birds die in the nest from overheating). The side of the house opens for observation and easy cleaning after the birds have moved out for the season.

Mounting of the house was designed to be easy. Simply slip the chain of the hanging wren house over a tree branch and watch the wrens nest in it right away! We recommend hanging the house in a sheltered area, under the shade and protected by tree branches, about 5-10 feet off the ground.

The tiny little bird with the big voice is common throughout most of North America. They are cinnamon-brown above, buff or gray below, and have fine bars on the wings and tail.

Their loud song and aggressive defense of their territories give the impression of a much larger bird than their 4.75" size. Their bubbling whistle may be heard in shrubs, bushes, farmyards and gardens, orchards, and parks.

Wren Mating Habits

These nervous little bundles of energy are quick to accept a nesting box for a home; the small entrance will protect the wren and it's family from the dangers most nesting birds encounter. The number of houses offered them in recent years have contributed to their increasing numbers.

Males and females look alike, but only the male is the singer, which mostly occurs during courting times. The male also starts building nests in anticipation of a mate. He will stuff the birdhouse with twigs, nearly enough to exclude himself, and then sometimes build a nest in another nearby house or cavity. When the female arrives, she chooses the nest she likes best and lines it with grasses before laying 5 to 6 speckled eggs in it.

This habit of the male wren can take up several of your birdhouses, leaving fewer for other songbirds. You may wish to put up more houses in this scenario.
