What makes our product unique?
All of our animal shelters are hand-crafted using sustainably-grown Eastern White Pine Wood. Eastern White Pine is an ideal material for our houses & feeders because it provides superior insulation during the summer and winter months while remaining light in weight and easy to hang.

The Wakefield Way

Health, Wealth and Happiness for All Wildlife

The Wakefield Way is a guiding principle that we incorporate in everything we do. From farming Virginia peanuts in the fields to handcrafting premium birdhouses in the shop, we focus on maximizing the health, wealth, and happiness of our backyard friends.

We've built lasting relationships with local Virginia farmers and suppliers to spread awareness of these principles and promote a better quality of life for animals across the country.

  • Health - We proactively work to promote better health by improving our products and spreading awareness. Our peanuts are high in protein and our birdhouses provide insulation and protection.
  • Wealth - This principle focuses on abundance and need. While birds are capable of fending for themselves, we believe in providing necessities such as food and shelter when they are otherwise scarce.
  • Happiness - Enjoy watching as new birds flock to your yard each morning for some peanuts, and enjoy seeing new families move in to your Wakefield birdhouse each season.

Wren Singing on a Tree Branch before making a nest in a Wakefield Birdhouse

Chickadee birds loving building their nests in Wakefield birdhouses.

Warblers are beautiful, colorful birds that use Wakefield birdhouses to protect their nestlings.

Bluebirds put their nests in natural cavities or in nest boxes such as a Wakefield Birdhouse

Bubbly and energetic, wrens are known for their beautiful song voices and distinct flat heads and long beaks.

Wrens will commonly nest in birdhouses that sway in the wind, and their preferred hole opening size is 1 1/8 inches.

Undeniably curious, chickadees have a habit of investigating new areas and people. They are quick to discover new feeders and houses, making them an extremely common bird to find in your birdhouse.

Their preferred hole opening size is 1 1/8 inches.

Often found foraging for insects amongst small branches and shrubs, Warblers are beautiful birds that typically stay low to the ground, usually feeding at heights below 10 feet.

Because of this, if trying to attract a Warbler, you'll want to hang your birdhouse around 10 feet off the ground. Their preferred hole opening size is 1 1/4 inches.

Bluebirds are common cavity nesters and will often select sites such as an old woodpecker hole to build their nests.

Older bluebirds will often prefer a nest box over a tree cavity, such as the birdhouses we offer. Their preferred hole opening size is 1 1/2 inches.

House Wrens are commonly attracted to swaying birdhouses.

How to Quickly Attract Birds to your Birdhouse

It's one thing to own a birdhouse, but attracting them is a different story. Here are some tips for attracting birds to your Wakefield birdhouse:

  • Picking a good nesting location is a must - Birds seek out the shade and protection of thick bushes or small trees when looking for a home. Please see our chart above for hanging height by species.
  • Face it away from harsh weather - Make sure the entrance hole faces away from prevailing winds that normally come from the east and west. The smooth sloped roof not only allows rainwater to roll away from the enclosure but also overhangs over the entryway, allowing for a safe and dry landing spot for birds to use before entering their home. The safer the home, the more likely a bird family will move in!
  • Layout the welcome mat - Make your birdhouse stand out for possible residents! Attract them using our own Wakefield Virginia Peanuts. Peanuts are a favorite of many species and are sure to bring occupants to your home quickly. Search ASIN B07815BS4N

Painting a Log Cabin Birdhouse

Great for Home Decoration, Arts and Crafts

This beautiful log cabin design will accentuate your patio, lawn, garden, mantle, deck, or anywhere else around your home. Paint, decorate, and personalize it any way you'd like.

  • Always use water-based latex paint, and avoid lead-based paints since they can be toxic to birds.
  • Colors we recommend painting your birdhouse to include red, yellow, orange, and white.
  • Avoid using colors that are fluorescent, metallic, iridescent. The dramatic brightness and other additives in the paint could be harmful to wildlife.
  • Avoid painting around the entrance hole and other airway gaps.

Birdhouses are the perfect gift to accentuate your patio, lawn, garden, deck, and home. Wakefield premium birdhouses are hand-crafted in the USA and made from a light-colored cedar wood. Cedar wood is an ideal material because it is weather-resistant, allowing for outside use all year long. The light-colored wood provides insulation to keep baby birds cool in the summertime and reduces the risk of overheating in the nest.

The Wakefield Log Cabin Bird House provides protection from the cold and elements for most common backyard birds including wrens, chickadees, nuthatches, and titmice. Its enclosed design provides protection against predators, heavy rain and harsh snow.

The front hole of this birdhouse measures 1.5 inches wide. Two different-sized predator-guards are included, which provide the birds with additional protection from predators such as squirrels and larger birds, as well as enable you to change the hole opening size of the bird house, which can vary depending on the type of bird you are trying to attract.

What types of birds does each hole size attract?

  • 1 1/2" hole - Finch, Bluebird, Tree Swallow, House sparrow, Flicker Woodpecker, Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers, Violet-Green Swallows, Hairy Woodpeckers
  • 1 1/4" Predator Guard - Titmice, Nuthatch, Downy Woodpecker, Warblers, Bewick’s Wren
  • 1 1/8" Predator Guard - House Wren, Chickadee

How to Mount or Hang:

Simply tie a rope or strong string through the metal hook at the top of the birdhouse to hang from a tree branch. This also makes a great decorative piece for indoors, such as on your fireplace or mantle.

How to clean your Wakefield Birdhouse:

Unscrew the two screws on the bottom of the birdhouse to remove the floor. Remove all nesting material and scrape off any remaining organic matter with an old toothbrush. We recommend cleaning the birdhouse after each season to promote good health for new birds moving in.
